GENETICS OF HEREDITARY CANCERS

An Oncologist’s perspective

5-20% of all cancer cases are hereditary. Some individuals who carry a harmful genetic mutation are at an increased lifetime risk of developing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Genetic test results can help in treatment in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and management in survivors and unaffected women. Multigene panel testing can help identify the mutations present in other genes over and above BRCA1 and BRCA2 which also play a role in development of hereditary cancers.
