Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel

What is the Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel?

Gastrointestinal Pathogen Multiplex PCR Panel is a CE-IVD real-time, multiplex PCR-based test. It detects and differentiates 15 bacteria, 3 parasites, and 5 viruses that cause gastroenteritis. This Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel Test allows the simultaneous identification of multiple pathogens in a single stool sample.

List of Pathogens Covered

CategoryDetails
Bacteria Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Clostridium difficile toxin A, Clostridium difficile toxin B, Shiga toxin producing E. coli (STEC), stx1/ stx2, Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), eae Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), elt/est, Shigella/ enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), ipaH.
ParasitesEntamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium spp., Dientamoeba fragilis.
VirusNorovirus (GI/GII/GIV), Rotavirus (A), Adenovirus (40/41), Astrovirus, Sapovirus (GI/ GII/GIV/GV).

When to Recommend the Gl Pathogen Panel Test

  • Diarrhoea with Complications: Presence of fever, severe abdominal cramps, or signs of sepsis.
  • Moderate to Severe Symptoms: Cases requiring urgent identification of the underlying cause.
  • High Risk of Disease Transmission: During outbreaks or in individuals who may spread the infection.
  • Dysentery Cases: Presentation with bloody diarrhoea for pathogen identification.
  • Persistent Symptoms: Diarrhoea lasting more than seven days without resolution.
  • Immunocompromised Individuals: Patients with weakened immunity experiencing diarrhoea.

Specification

  • Test Codes: MGM1728
  • Sample Type: Stool (pea-sized or 2ml of unformed stool) collected in a sterile wide-mouth container.
  • Precautions: Avoid contamination with urine or water.
  • Storage Guidelines: If not processed immediately, store at 4°C and transport at the same temperature. For delays exceeding 48 hours, freeze the sample at or below -20°C (preferably -70°C) and transport at the same temperature.
  • Methodology: Multiplex Real-Time PCR
  • Turnaround Time (TAT): 2 working days

Targeted Pathogens in MedGenome’s GI Panel

Key Highlights of MedGenome Labs GI Panel TEST

Comprehensive Pathogen Detection

Identifies 23 pathogens in a single tube, unlike assays requiring separate panels for bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Flexible Sample Handling

Works with fresh or frozen stool specimens without pre-treatment or transport media.

Extensive Validation

Thoroughly validated for potentially cross-reactive pathogens with guaranteed 100% sensitivity and specificity.

What is Gastrointestinal Pathogen Infection?

A Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathogen Infection occurs when harmful pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites, infect the digestive tract, leading to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever.

Importance of Detecting GI Infections

ReasonImportance
Rapid diagnosis for early treatmentEnables timely and appropriate treatment, reducing complications.
Prevention of severe outcomesPrevents serious issues like dehydration, sepsis, or chronic illness.
Outbreak controlHelps contain infections in hospitals, communities, or during foodborne outbreaks.
Antibiotic stewardshipAvoids misuse of antibiotics, helping combat antimicrobial resistance.
Differentiation of pathogensEnsures correct treatment by distinguishing between pathogens with similar symptoms.
What is the Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel?

The Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel is a highly advanced test designed to identify a wide range of bacteria, viruses, and parasites that cause stomach and intestinal infections, commonly known as gastroenteritis. Unlike conventional GI pathogen panels, such as stool culture, microscopy for ova and parasites, ELISA, and rapid lateral flow tests, which can only detect one or a few pathogens at a time, this advanced GI panel test can detect 19 different pathogens in one go.

The test includes 10 bacteria, 4 parasites, and 5 viruses, making it a thorough and quick way to figure out what is causing your infection. This comprehensive approach ensures you get a precise diagnosis swiftly, enabling timely and effective treatment.

Who Should Consider Getting the Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel Test?
